Roland sh-101

  • The Roland SH-101 is an analog synthesizer manufactured by the Roland Corporation between 1982 and 1986.

Though it was something of a commercial failure during the time of its manufacture, it later became a staple of electronic music in the 1990s, particularly house music.

The SH-101 is monophonic, meaning it can only play one note at a time. It has a single oscillator and a sub-oscillator, a low-pass filter, a mixer allowing users to blend different waveforms plus a noise generator, and an arpeggiator and sequencer.

An ADSR envelope generator controls the filter and VCA, and the filter, VCA, pitch and pulse width can be controlled with an LFO.

During the 1990s resurgence of analogue synthesisers, the 101 became a staple in dance music studios. It was used by many famous electronic musicians.

Famous musicians that have used the SH-101 include:

Nitzer Ebb, Aphex Twin, Vince Clarke of Erasure, Paul Frick from Tangerine Dream, Future Sound of London, Orbital, Überzone, The Prodigy,808 State,The Grid, Cirrus, Eat Static, Jimmy Edgar, Apollo 440, Devo, Union Jack, Luke Vibert, Dirty Vegas, Skinny Puppy, Pig, MSTRKRFT, Josh Wink, Depeche Mode, The Crystal Method, Astral Projection, Les Rythmes Digitales, Sense Datum, Squarepusher, KMFDM, Freddy Fresh, Lab-4, Jimmy Dickinson Little Angels, The Chemical Brothers, Boards of Canada, The Knife and many others.

ROland RS-202

  • The Roland RS-202 is a polyphonic string synthesizer, introduced by Roland in 1976. It was the successor to the Roland RS-101, released in 1975.

The synthesizer operates using sawtooth wave oscillators, which uses a frequency divider in a similar manner to an electronic organ to provide full polyphony across a five-octave keyboard. The signal is then fed through a single envelope shaper, making the instrument paraphonic.

The front panel has two separate controls for the top and bottom of the keyboard, which can have independent sounds. Each note can be assigned a separate envelope articulation, which is necessary to avoid re-triggering the attack if an extra note was added to an existing chord being played.

To achieve a more realistic sound of an ensemble of string players, the output is fed through a chorus effect using a number of delay lines triggered by low frequency oscillators.

Notable users of the RS-202 include Genesis' Tony Banks, Camel's Peter Bardens, Los Bukis and Tomita.

roland sh-09

  • A very stripped down monosynth from Roland's classic SH-series.

Its single oscillator only has PWM, ramp, square and noise waveforms. It has a similar architecture to the SH-101, the VCA can switch between gate or envelope, the VCF is pretty standard, and there is a sample-hold function which is great for voltage controlled filtering into acid and back!

Another cool feature is its external input which will allow you to filter external audio through its VCF.

It is used by Orbital, Vince Clarke, BT, Conemelt, Josh Wink, Banco De Gaia, Mr. Oizo, Ladytron, Jimmy Edgar, Dave Holmes, Freddy Fresh, OMD, and 808 State.
